Chess in the Movies

Basalla has just finished his long project to document chess scenes in movies!

Bob Basalla about his book "Chess in the Movies":
"As a side hobby, and a way to produce "filler" items for the Cleveland Chess Bulletin in the 1980's I started collecting and publishing reviews of the chess scenes in various movies. The readers liked it a lot so I decided to gather as many as I could find and make a book. Soon many chess friends and others were letting me know about chess moments they had seen in movies they watched. I added those to the collection.

Then there were more . and more. In the end, after 15 years of spare time work on it, I had assembled my encyclopedic book "Chess in the Movies" with about 2000 movies with references to chess mentioned! It is 422 pages long of fairly small print just to make its price ($34.95) somewhat reasonable. Diagrams in the book give the reader the exact position, if it can be made out, of a game played in that movie.

Famous actors and actresses are listed in the back so one can look up what chess moments they might have been involved in. This only begins to hint at the treasure trove of amazing information contained within. For example: Would you want to know what the Klingon term for chess is? What movies contained a position from a famous game on its board? What famous chess people have appeared in movies?"
